MARIA TANASE lady singer, the magic bird of Romanian folk song in Romanian culture
She maybe was the biggest lady singer, Magic Bird of Romanian folk song in Romanian culture as Nicolae Iorga called her. Nicolae Iorga told her
” – You miss are the most beautiful voice I never heard before ” .
Maria Tanase was born in Bucharest in 1913, September 25 in a suburb place, Caramidari slum from ardelean mother (Transylvania area, Sibiu) and oltean father (Oltenia area, Gorj ). She had a brother Francois and one sister Aurica.
She starts the stage life in 1934 June second on Carabus Theater under the nickname of Mary Atanasiu, chosen by Constantin Tanase.
The first printing on vinyl took place in 1934 under Lifa records label with the ” Mansarda” song .
Year of 1937 brings the collaboration with Colombia Records, under the supervision of Constantin Brailoiu and Harry Brauner, famous ethnomusicologists in that times.
The first two songs being, Cine iubeste si lasa (Who loves and leaves) and Am jurat de mii de ori (I swore a thousand times), the orchestra accompaniment was made by Costica Taraf Vraciu from Gorj county.
On February 20th, year of 1938, the debut of Maria Tanase on radio took place with Ion Matache popular folk group, where Maria Tanase played songs like:
– Cine iubește și lasă
– Geaba mă mai duc acasă
– Mărie si Marioara
– Când o fi la moartea mea.
Her voice were a beautiful contralto, so, she could play very well folk music, light music, fiddler, romantic, revue.
Her departing on April 16, 1939 to New York World’s Fair arranged in Flushing Meadows neighborhood of Queens.
The official inauguration of Romanian flag stand took place at May 5th, 1939 , where Maria Tanase had the opportunity to meet over Constantin Brancusi (one of the biggest scluptor in the world) and George Enescu (a brilliant composer and a great patriot, a huge Romanian contemporary mind).
In March 1941 undertake an artistic tour in Turkey, where she got the honorary citizen of Turkish President, after a great inauguration of Summer Theatre “Taxim” from Istanbul.
At the end of this tour she returned to the country together with the finest team elements of Romanian theater and music singers and they played for Romanian soldiers, wounded in war.
After the establishment of communism in 1952, Maria Tanase is requested as a music teacher at Middle School No. 1 of Bucharest, in a newly created departments of popular songs.
In 1958 prints at Electrecord 4 Romanian folk songs translated and adapted into French by Nicole Sachelarie :
– Doina de la Dolj
– La malediction d’amour (Who loves and leaves)
– Danse Montagnard ( Uhai Bade )
– Tiens, Tiens, Tiens et na (iac – asa).
They were edited on a microsion Electrecord and were then included along with other songs of the artist sung in Romanian, a disc edited in collaboration with home French “Le Chant du Monde” discusses awarded the 1965 “Grand Prix du disque ” (Grand Prize of the disc), awarded by the Academy” Charles Cros ” from Paris.
Maria Tanase had a repertoire extremely vast that has included songs from all Romanian regions and all categories:
– orations suite,
– playing (hore, Serbian, spinning, jieneşti , local areas popular dances )
– love to party ,
She also played on the theatre stage and in few movies like:

In 1955 she was awarded the State Prize, and in 1957 was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the supreme people.
In the early 1940 s, Maria Tanase was the liaison agency and influence of the Special Intelligence Service (SIS) headed by Eugen Cristescu.
In the spring of 1963, it is a tour with Taraf of Gorj, in Hunedoara area, when Maria Tanase finds she is suffering from lung cancer. She stop the tournament, asking Mia Braia to replace her. On May 2 Maria gets home in Bucharest and she died at Fundeni Hospital on June 22, year of 1963, about 14:00 o’clock .
All the city is full with people crying for her, people from country side also come for the LOVING BIRD SINGER, funerals.
She lived a tumultuous life of luxury, but she was always sad that he could not have children.
Maria remaines a legend in Romanian popular folk song, no one could imitate the amazing voice, remaines unique in hers exuberant way.
